Jobs and News News Joseph Builds Confidence and Independence with Travel Training Travelling independently can be a big step for many young people – especially when it involves trains, busy stations, and unfamiliar routes. For Joseph, the idea of getting to work by train felt impossible at first. But with support from bemix, he’s now travelling confidently on two separate trains to reach his work placement – and feeling proud of what he’s achieved. Joseph is part of the bemix Supported Employment programme, where young people with learning difficulties and/or autism grow their confidence, skills, and experience in real work settings. He currently has a placement with Sustainable Garden Solutions, where he is developing admin skills. To help Joseph get to and from his placement, he took part in travel training with bemix. The goal was to learn to travel independently from Rainham to Cuxton – a journey that includes changing trains at Strood. “I never thought in my life I would be able to do this because of how anxious I thought I would be, and now after doing it a couple of times, I feel very comfortable doing it over and over again.” With just four weeks of training and encouragement, Joseph learned the route and quickly grew in confidence. “Joseph was very anxious when we first talked about travel training,” said Sam Seal, Joseph's Supported Employment Specialist “But with support, he overcame his worries and very quickly learned the route and felt comfortable to travel alone. This is a huge achievement and Joseph should be very proud of himself.” Being able to travel independently means Joseph has more freedom, flexibility and independence – both in his work and in everyday life. Well done Joseph – we’re so pleased to see you thriving! Are you thinking about the steps you will take after school or college? Making plans for your future can feel like a lot - but you don’t have to figure it out on your own. To find out more about joining a Supported Employment programme, click here.
