Jobs and News News bemix young people welcome Wheel for Oneness and Helen Whately This academic year, we have updated the Supported Employment curriculum with some exciting new learning, including Preparation for Working Life and Be A Leader modules. Whilst our Education Team does a fantastic job in delivering this curriculum, opportunities to hear from and about other members of the community are always welcome. For students in the Canterbury Supported Internship group, this included welcoming Wheel For Oneness, followed by MP Helen Whately, into the classroom on a sunny Friday afternoon in September. Wheel for Oneness is a social inclusion initiative that “is dedicated to assisting people with disabilities and mental illnesses who struggle to assimilate into society. The organisation is also committed to nurturing these people to do what they desire and encouraging everyone to learn from each other and work together to contribute to society, no matter if they have disabilities or are able-bodied” At the time of their visit, the team was in England to support five swimmers undertaking a two-way relay swim across the English Channel — a symbolic challenge that reflects resilience, unity, and the power of inclusive communities. Canterbury Teacher Jody Baldwin said, "It was an absolute joy to meet the representatives from the Wheel of Oneness Charity and to learn how they help and support people. We had some great discussions and shared our experiences" Later in the afternoon, students were visited by the MP for Faversham and Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Helen Whately. After a morning of researching Helen’s work, students quizzed her on her policies, ideas and beliefs, gaining a deeper insight into how change takes place in their local community.
